With Ma Petite Amie at Last!
Together at the airport at lastBonjour from France, my home for this next season of life. I arrived just under a week ago. In the past few weeks, I’ve left my job in California, moved out of my apartment, sold most of my belongings and prepared for this international move. It’s been a wild ride, and it is SO good to finally be here with Esther. (If you haven’t checked in lately, read the past couple posts for more info on this amazing girl and how she appeared in my life.)

The weekend I arrived was a fantastic time reunited with Esther, this time on her side of the Atlantic. It has been surreal visiting the places I’ve seen over a webcam on Skype or only heard her talk about.

2 days after arriving, I dove in to intensive French in a class in Geneva and am now spending nearly 4 hours a day struggling with 14 other folks from every corner of the globe to learn French. It’s been a bit overwhelming, but I am quickly realizing how much it helps to learn a language when you’re actually living in a place where it is spoken – and the incentive is much greater! Understanding the question of an old man on the bus today “is this the city?” was a thrilling experience, and picking out words in passing conversations spurs me on to study more. The first day of class we learned a few phrases, and were all asked why we were in Geneva learning French. I explained (mainly in English) that I was here to see about this girl, and so we learned how to say girlfriend: “ma petite amie”. It was a great way to start my French language learning, and I certainly couldn’t ask for a better French tutor than Esther!

GenevaIn the weeks leading up to my arrival here in France, all I could think about was getting here and seeing Esther. Now that this has happened (hallelujah!), the reality of life immersed in a foreign culture is setting in. From the tiny elevators to the foreign language all around me, I’m certainly not in California any more! But I really do love the challenge of cultural immersion, never having been faced with it on this level. And of course, being here with Esther makes things so much easier and truly a delight!

Just last night I joined her at an athletic club she’s a part of. We did a number of running exercises. The trainer would send people to various stations based on how they were doing with certain exercises. It was quite funny when he yelled “les pneus!” at me and I could do nothing but smile back. He repeated “les pneus!” and pointed to a pile of tires with rope attached to them. I saw another unlucky Frenchman in tight spandex looping the rope around his waist and running with a pile of tires behind him, and realized I was being punished in the same way. Apparently my running form was not up to par. So with another pile of tires behind me I joined spandex man running a few laps around some poles, at the same time getting him to help me pronounce the newest French word to be added to my vocabulary: “les pneus” – tires!

Our Apartment Building in FranceAfter the club, we had a quick bite to eat and then strolled a few blocks to a Catholic church where an excellent Eastern European orchestra was performing a concert. It was a beautiful concert, complete with mulled wine at intermission. After the concert, strolling back with Esther at my side, I was reminded again how good it is to be here.

This weekend we’re off to Paris, and next week I'll be in London for work with Lausanne while Esther heads to Latvia for her job. Our trips overlap perfectly, leaving us in awe yet again of the amazing provision of the Father during this thrilling season. I might just get used to this!
