Our Thoughts

Then and Now
The last time I passed through Hong Kong, life was very different!

We passed through Hong Kong after our marathon 15 hour flight from San Francisco, changing planes to head directly to our new home: Shanghai. 15 hours is a LONG time to spend in an airplane folks…but this time around, the flight was much more bearable as we got a nice little upgrade to business class.

My family is the king of profiting from overbooked flights, and after years of training from my dad, I’ve learned to rapidly discern when airlines will be offering upgrades, hotel stays and compensation to volunteers willing to take later flights. We were at the front of line when they started taking volunteers. Business class on a 15 hour flight is certainly a treat, be it the nice wine, truly reclining seat or the personal touch from our flight attendants “Mr. and Mrs. Brumme, have you made your meal selection?”, it was a great experience!

But more significantly, as we transitioned through Hong Kong I reflected back on the last time I was passing through Hong Kong 18 months ago after the Young Leaders Gathering in Malaysia.

Here is the opening to my journal entry written on the flight from Hong Kong on October 1, 2006:
Discouragement, depression, unmet desire, insecurity and doubt all are eager to consume me, lurking at the door to my spirit.
I had just met an incredible girl who lived in France, and here I was headed back to the California desert despairing of being alone, longing for a wife.

Fast forward a year and a half to just a few days ago, and here I was passing through Hong Kong again. But this time my stunning wife was by my side and we were headed to our new home in Shanghai. How incredibly the Lord has been working!

So as we begin our new life in Shanghai (at least for several months), we’re full of anticipation. There are plenty of questions….How long will we be here? What will we be doing? Where is God leading us? But our beginning in China is full of a sense of our God working in us and leading us. The destination, even a few months from now, is unclear. But as always, our Father is more interested in the process, so we’re pressing on with our ear to His heart, trusting He will make things clear in His timing and for His glory!

Here we go…
