The Whole Church Gathered
30 hours after leaving our hotel in Malaysia, I arrived back to my desert homestead. I’ve been in Asia the past two weeks, the first spent seeing friends in Hong Kong and doing a little solo travel in Malaysia, the second spent at a conference for Younger Leaders. The gathering was sponsored by Lausanne (a group I’ve worked with in the past), and included over 500 young leaders from 112 countries. Never in my life have I been part of such a beautifully diverse gathering – it was an astounding collection of cultures, all in one place!

The week was focused on preparing this next generation of Christian leaders for leadership in whatever their ministry context may be, as well as immersing them in the “Lausanne spirit” (humility, prayer and partnership) and the rich history of the Lausanne movement. (Learn more about Lausanne)

I was both serving at and participating in the gathering, so it was an overwhelming time with a hectic schedule. There is still so much processing to do from the gathering, but a highlight was certainly a number of interactions with fascinating people from around the world.

Speaking at the YLGI also was able to give a brief talk on the second evening about my own Lausanne story – how I got connected with Lausanne 2 years ago and why I’m passionate about what Lausanne is about.

But my little chat was entirely insignificant next to the amazing people I met. For starters, most of the participants were from Asia and Africa (meaning us blasted Americans and other Westerners were not the majority! Hooray!) so the participants truly represented the global Church. And everyone had a fascinating story – one guy from Africa had walked for 5 days to get to the nearest transportation hub to ultimately get him to the gathering! A missionary in Iraq, a translator from France, a church planter from China – it truly was a unique little taste of God’s goodness from every corner of the globe!

What love the Father has lavished upon us – that WE should be called sons and daughters of God! And what can we do but overflow with that love? What grace. What goodness. What a God we serve! To be in such a gathering with so many consumed by His love – to meet so many siblings in the Kingdom – to interact with so many diverse, fellow image-bearers of God – true goodness!

Much more to share on the various encounters at the gathering and my other travels (and photos too). But for the time being – my bed looks quite inviting! Until I write again...delight in the perfect love of the Father!
