The Western Bible
Amazing stuff here. The Dutch have finally done it (although I might have guessed the French would be leading the charge on this one...) They've taken the Bible and edited out those parts they don't like, specifically those "difficult parts surrounding economic justice, possessions and money".

The new "Western Bible" is only in Dutch at this point, but it seems to be wildly successful. This is probably due to the insightful comments of the team behind the Western Bible. Chairman Mr. De Rijke remarks,
"Jesus was very inspiring for our inner health, but we don't need to take his naïve remarks about money seriously. He didn't study economics, obviously." He continued, "What if all Christians stopped being anxious, for example, and started expecting everything from God? Or gave their possessions to the poor, for that matter. Our economy would be lost. The truth is quite the contrary: a strong economy and a healthy work ethic is a gift from God."
Shocking, isn't it? The quote may be a little over the top, but it's the real deal from a press release sent out by the folks behind the Western Bible. Okay, "real deal" may be a bit strong. The press release is real, and the Western Bible is really being printed. But the motivation behind it isn't what it seems.

I was honestly shocked as I read the press release, but they came clean in the final paragraphs:
"the Western Bible is a joke. It is published by Time to Turn, a network of Christian students and young adults in the Netherlands 'who want to choose a sustainable and just way of life, based on their faith in Jesus Christ.' "
So yes, I fell for it, but what a powerful way of demonstrating how easily we overlook sections of the Bible, particularly those calling followers of Jesus to a radical lifestyle. These folks are on to something. The Western Bible may hit all-too-close to home with many of us in the West. Maybe I should pick up a copy when it's printed in English...could be a nice relief from all those "edgy" statements Jesus made. I mean, He was a bit "naive" wasn't He?
