The Tragic "Unthinkable Crisis"
Did you hear the news? Christianity will not survive in America for another decade!

At least – that’s what a national Christian youth ministry called Teen Mania is claiming. And here’s how they describe what this “unthinkable crisis” will look like (word-for-word, nothing omitted from their list!):
  • Church attendance dwindles
  • Tithes and offerings are at an all-time low
  • New church buildings sit empty
  • Life-giving sermons go unheard
  • The role of a church leader becomes irrelevant
(gasp!) No! Not empty church buildings! And no one to hear those life-giving sermons! But how will the pastors feel? (especially when they hear that tithes are at an all-time low!)

What an “unthinkable crisis”! It really could be the end of Christianity in America!

That is, if Christianity has everything to do with buildings, tithing and professional pastors. Which of course it does….right?...

Oh yeah, that’s right. That whole “we are the church” bit.

The truth is – the list in the Teen Mania advertisement that I came across is laughable and utterly absurd. Not one of those items on the list has a thing to do with the survival of Christianity in America, much less the health of the Church.

Here’s the point: Teen Mania is a legitimate, wonderful Christian organization that I truly believe is doing great work. The ad that I came across was for a great conference series focused on reaching the youth generation with the message of Christ – a worthy purpose indeed.

But the part of the ad that I am criticizing here has nothing to do with the conference series. It really shouldn’t even be a part of the advertisement.

So why is it there? Well, one of the most effective marketing approaches is to use fear. And sadly, since the ad is targeted towards professional pastors, by appealing to the fears of pastors loosing their power and influence, Teen Mania is putting basic marketing principles into practice!

The ad could have mentioned concerns that young people don’t know Jesus, or that they are chasing after the cares of the world instead of the abundant life that Christ offers. If things were as they should be, this approach would grip the hearts of pastors far more than the thought of loosing their power and influence!

But instead, Teen Mania chose to scare pastors with the image of empty pews and an empty offering plate. Worst of all, I have a hunch that this fear-based marketing scheme may hit home with all too many pastors.

God, I pray I am wrong!
