The French Postal System, V-Day, and Other Tidbits
It’s hard to believe it’s been almost 7 weeks since my arrival here in France. On one hand, it feels like I’ve just arrived. On the other hand, the days have been so significant on so many levels it feels like I’ve been here even longer. Either way, it’s good to be here walking out this wild journey with Esther and the Lord.

I’m currently in the midst of a difficult week since Esther is galavanting around Europe for work (without me!). After being so close these past weeks, even a few days apart is tough. Fortunately, mama Brumme came to the rescue with what may be the largest care package the French have ever seen. The Largest Care Package France has ever seenPerhaps its excessive size is the reason the French didn’t even bother attempting to deliver it! Tracking it online, we knew it had arrived. But for whatever reason, they didn’t leave a note or message about the package. I finally charged off to the post office and mustered up the guts to explain in French that “My parents give me package from United States. Where is it?” accompanied by wild gestures. She took my ID and went in back, and I could help but laugh out loud when she returned with the massive box.

To my delight, it was full of such treasures as cookie dough, real tortilla chips…and refried beans! I can now have all the Mexican fiestas I could ever want. (might even invite the neighbors…) Three cheers for mom!

On to the other highlights from the past couple weeks…

The big day last week, the 14th of February…that one day each year set apart for couples everywhere to delight in their “couple-hood”. The retailers certainly make the most of the opportunity, even on this side of the Atlantic.

Dinner on V-DayThis was the first time in my life I’ve ever been in a relationship for the big V-day, so it was a bit stressful. I didn’t want to give into all the hype, the marketing gimmicks. But I did want to do something to celebrate our relationship. After racking my brain, I came up with the one contact I had at her work who could be my “inside man”. He readily agreed, and the day before V-day I met with him secretly and handed off some flowers and a box of chocolates (all of which had to meet this girl’s high standard for chocolate – ie. Swiss chocolate with massively high percentages of real cocoa! I gave her a hard time about this at first, but must confess the chocolate is amazing and Hershey’s just doesn’t taste the same…).

When Esther left that evening (day before V-day) my inside contact went to work. The next morning on the big day she arrived and to her surprise found flowers, chocolate and a card from me and was left wondering how it got there. She arrived late that morning, so all her coworkers knew of the surprise and greeted her with knowing smiles when she came in. That evening I made one of the few “classier” meals I knew of (thank you Mr. Bakewicz!), which seemed to round out V-day quite nicely.

Esther and me with Patty and GaëlThis month we’ve also been able to connect with some folks with similar hearts for the Lord. We met up with Patty (Brazilian) and Gaël (French) for dinner and a night at the pool tables. Everyone kindly opted to use English most of the time with me, though French seems to be coming along fairly well. I continue to be frustrated with my limited vocabulary, but the grammar side of things clicks well with me and I am now comfortable shopping alone and communicating with people on the bus etc. (or picking up oversized packages at the post office…).

I am amazed at how hard the language is to pronounce properly. I’ve studied Spanish and German, but only now with French do I realize what a terribly sloppy language English is. The pronunciation of vowel sounds is so particular with French, it’s a bit absurd. I don’t know how many times in our class the teacher has had us repeat and repeat and repeat a word, trying to mimic what she says to no avail. “But that is the word I said!” Alas, one step at a time…
