Our Thoughts

Our Paris
It would no doubt be a crack up to read Andrew’s perspective of last weekend in the City of Lights. Still, allow me to at least tend to the awkward silence on this page lest our fast paced life mow over such precious memories.

As first time married lovers but certainly not Paris newbies, we avoided the tourist traps like the plague - by now, even Andrew has seen and “done them” as he puts it. Call me pretentious, call it unfair, but seeing Eiffel’s Tower contribution to the Exposition Universelle world fair in 1889 just doesn’t quite tickle our fancy anymore. Combined, we’ve spent countless weekends blowing through the capital of France with guests. This time, we intentionally did not want to plan much at all. And for once, the Brumme’s modest goals seemed achievable: enjoy a daily breakfast in a brasserie with a large café au lait & croissant. And eat well during the day as well. Due to extensive picnic prep, we just made the 10am Saturday fast TGV train from Geneva. By lunchtime, it was time to throw our bags down and race into “town”.

We both love Paris and the fact that each building looks like a piece of art is certainly part of it. We meandered from the Galeries Lafayette (hoping their famous Christmas window decoration would be ready for our visit), past the stunning Opera House to the Ritz, where Lady Di spent her last night on earth. From there we munched on roasted chestnuts at the ferris wheel at the beginning of the Champs Elysées. We headed to Châtelet to eat at the Amazonial, where we had been very satisfied before. I’d blindly eat anything on the menu from their filets mignons to their magrets de canard. In fact, I swear I even saw our neighbors eating the wooden table across from us everything tasted so great.

The next day, we strolled along the Canal Saint Martin, a quiet area off the beaten track where part of our favorite film Amélie was shot. It’s one of the 3 main lovers’ walks so of course we had to try it. After strolling for awhile we decided to try the ingenuous 1 euro bike scheme. The Velib’ scheme is so brilliant, Andrew got a high just thinking through the automated process he renamed: the “best invention the world has ever known”. In order to reduce pollution in the French capital, the Paris town hall and a fat-pocket-booked-sponsor, have made 10,000 bikes available throughout the capital. Swipe your credit card to pay 1 Euro for the days’ subscription and you can take out a bike – riding it to any point in the capital. Return it to the next station within 30 mins and rental is free. Andrew and I screamed with glee at the prospect of dodging cars and loading the bike basket up with Döner Kebabs on our way to the science museum. In modern Parisian style, we raced to find the next Velib’ station and quickly insert the bike into the stand before our 30 mins were up.

In our efforts to avoid weekend Paris-Geneva traffic, I took Monday off and we decided to go to suburban town Les Mureaux, where I lived on and off for 12 years. There, we met my old neighbors, introduced them to Andrew. All shocked at his level of French, they welcomed us both in for a chat over tea like old friends. Missing the train back into Paris even allowed us to see my old high-school, the Lycée François Villon as well as the castle, converted into a music conservatory, once well frequented by the Heckman family. It was a nostalgic time for me to see our old home. I had flashbacks of teenage me running out of the home slamming the metal gate to plop myself in the little grey 3 cylinder Chevrolet Sprint waiting patiently outside for some art or music lesson I was late for (see a pattern here?). It was fun to at last be able to share this with my new husband after all the stories recounted.

We headed back into the City for our last meal before we boarded in the Gare de Lyon station and took our seats in the fastest train in the world back to Geneva. Complete silence settled this excited mind as I rested on my husband’s shoulder. We arrived late into the frosty night but with great memories made. All in all it was a wonderful newly wed weekend à deux.
