Our Thoughts

Newness in the New Year
As we begin to transition into a new phase in our lives, we have felt the importance of visiting several dear friends in the area whilst we can so easily. The thought motivated our recent trips to Paris, the UK and Germany and incredible visits – Caro and Pat who came down to see us for a wintery Geneva visit. It’s sure been hectic these last months, but good!

Rumor has it that the Brummes are going to Shanghai, and at last ‘rumor’ is officially right as we bought our tickets to Pudong airport just a couple of weeks ago! I resigned from my current job in Geneva, essentially to be free to focus on our marriage during this key first year of our lives. Learning to listen to one another and more importantly to hear what God has to say to us. It is a bold step for me as I am jumping out into a world of unknowns. That said, it is incredibly freeing in another way; realizing we could literally go anywhere or do anything we want to. And for us as young newly weds, it truly is now or never – one rather smart person once said they only want to regret what they have done and not what they haven’t. And within limits, we tend to agree with that statement.

We will spend several weeks in the US come end of January before discovering Asia by mid-March for an extended visit. Thank God this time the “extended visit” isn’t about Andrew ‘coming to see about a girl’ but rather us both traveling the globe together for an unknown amount of time (at least 3 months). From a business perspective and if you want to work internationally, China is what we call a “no-brainer”. For us two, after understanding ways of life in the US and Europe, it will certainly be valuable professionally and hopefully also personally as a time of growth as we extract our life as we know it in France to plant us even for a short while in a place foreign to both of us. We’re hoping our dear friends there, Chris and Corrie, won’t tire of us too soon. :)

In China, Andrew will continue to work freelancing whilst I hopefully take on language related jobs alongside learning some Mandarin. This will be the time for us both to explore afresh such burning questions as “our future”, “foreign culture”, “starting a business”, “working together”…many topics the France Brumme team desires to discuss.

In the meantime, we are taking in as much oxygen as we can before going to the citadel of China’s modern economy. After enjoying our very first Christmas together including Mr. squatty tree (see picture), we spent the holiday season relaxing with my family in the French Alps including great wine & dine (the 2001 Campo Viejo Rioja was the ultimate winner this season) before facing unending ‘to do’ lists before our departure.

Now, less than a month from D-day, the car and most of our earthly belongings are up for sale. Something tells me 2008 is going to be filled with much change and many surprises. Happy New Year, dear friends and family!
