Liberating Love, an Awkward Transition and Christmas Candy
I spent the weekend disconnected from the outside world – it was absolutely liberating! It’s been a wild month on all fronts with minimal time spent with the Father. So I turned off my cell phone, refused to open my email or log on to Skype – and (being that I don’t know anyone in my apartment complex) the world was literally unable to reach me!

God and I needed some time together. We had some stuff to talk about. So I packed some water, my ipod and a Bible and headed into the wilderness (literally – see right). I had my agenda for God and I to work through, and He was gracious enough to speak to some of my agenda items. But thankfully, He had much more planned for our weekend together. He wanted to give me a new understanding of the depth, intensity and perfection of His love. It was astounding and overwhelming.

By the time the weekend was over, it was as if I had heard the Gospel message for the first time. I saw how it truly was GOOD NEWS, and such an amazing reason to celebrate. We are loved so perfectly by God, it is the most liberating reality I have ever experienced – and I know I’m just scratching the surface of understanding it.

And so I reconnected with the world on Sunday afternoon, easing back in to email, phone calls and even a Skype chat with a friend (who’s a big fan of Togo’s. incidentally - but that's another story...). I feel renewed and refreshed, and ready to charge forward in peace through whatever challenges may come my way.

Now I could have ended this blog with that (a nice closing line, eh?), but I also wanted to share an experience I had this evening. I can’t seem to find any sort of smooth transition to telling you about this experience, so this will have to do.

I was sitting in my apartment tonight when I heard a knock on my door. This was a strange experience, given that I’ve never had someone come visit me here who I wasn’t expecting (and even that has happened only a handful of times). So imagine my surprise when I heard a knock at 7pm. I scurried to the door and, opening it, found a trio of children in K-mart costumes. My gosh! It is Halloween! I was so caught off guard, and the kids were staring at me with this wide-eyed, expectant look as they held out their plastic pumpkin buckets expecting some treat for having walked all the way up my stairs.

I panicked, and darted for the only candy I knew I had – a couple of full-size Ritter-Sport candy bars sitting in my fridge (to avoid being melted by the desert heat). Yes, it’s a bit questionable that they’d been there since this summer…okay maybe since last Christmas…but I had nothing else to give! I ran back to the door and dropped the massive treat into each of the buckets….but to my dismay another gaggle of children had arrived with buckets outstretched. I let out a yelp and hurried back to my fridge and found a candy cane of Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups (yes, they were wrapped in green, red and gold foil). I ran back and tossed one into each of the remaining buckets. The kids turned to leave and I slammed the door shut, closed all my blinds and turned off all the lights. I was totally out of candy and couldn’t risk another knock on the door.

It was a stressful experience – one I must surely be ready for next year. In the meantime, I sure hope that first trio of kids is grateful for the Ritter-Sports. I mean, that’s imported chocolate, and full-size at that!

Well enough fun for one night. Off to Colorado in the A.M., but a few* of my frequent visitors have been clamoring for an update. And I, of course, always want to honor the wishes of the people!
