Our Thoughts

I Said Yes!
[Friday 2pm] Mobile phone chirps at work. Text message from our dear friends Andy & Rachael:
“Hi Esther, we were wanting to go up the Salève and barbeque but the weather does look a bit cold. Maybe we can meet up there and have a coffee? Need to get out with Ella a bit more ;) Maybe around 6? And then we can go down to our place for dinner afterwards? Andy”
I got excited and called Andrew to tell him the great news.

And then it was all a bit of a daze after that. I raced home from work, we swapped work clothes for some bbq-baby proof jeans and rushed up to our local mountain, the Salève. By that time, our dear friends called the mobile phone – “Ella is a bit cranky, we think it is best for her to rest. Why don’t you guys just hang out a bit and come round for dinner later”. It was a disappointment but still hardly worth turning around at that point. Might as well enjoy the view..

So we walked around the deserted mountain top, me prancing around, Andrew smiling and us both loving the eagle-eye view of Geneva. We had prayed for the city before at that spot and it just brought back so many memories. Andrew, freshly back from the US, continued to trickle out the gifts he had been bearing saying: “I’ve got one other thing I brought you from home”. He presented me with a stunning book recapping our full phase 1 story: from the time we met to the weekend before he left to the US. Panting and finger flapping, I sat down and we paged through the square book entitled “Faithful: Our story of His faithfulness” featuring pictures of bike rides, trips, parties, first emails, skype chats.

Still on our knees, I started to pray and thank God for this first season in our lives. He truly has been faithful and so merciful towards us! And in wrapping up, I opened my eyes and said: “well, shall we go or what? Don’t want to be late!”

Savoring the moment, Andrew just continued, saying this is really a special season coming to a close. And what a beautiful new season has commenced since I got back. Then he started to kneel down. At first, I had no clue what he was up to. “Esther, I am wildly in love with you. I want to lay my life down for you and give you everything I have. I have so much peace about our relationship and I want you to be my wife -will you marry me?” A little shocked, I took a glance at the ring that had appeared from no where and choked up. All I could muster up was a weak “yes” squeak as I continued to weep for joy. Andrew held me, I bawled, we looked down at the beautiful sun rays over the city and told me that he had planned for us to go to a YWAM retreat center near Lausanne to pray about the future.

At that stage, we were really getting late, so we decided to pack later and zip down the hill to our poor friends’ who had been waiting. We arrived there, Andrew at the wheel seeing as I was in no state to drive whilst I rang dad, the first of the parents.

Then we rang the doorbell.

“Bonjour!” the deep voice welcomed us. No sight of our friends. Instead, the chef who had given us gourmet cooking lessons appeared at the door. Chef kit and all! “What, but, do, do you know why you are here? Where are..?” and he sat us down to the celebratory gourmet meal.

So many emotions, so much joy, so much surprise, so many questions. But here is the core of it…

We’re engaged to be married!!

Love, Esther
