Hanging on for the Ride
It seems the recent events in my life have increased interest in my little ole’ website. I’ve always been one who blogs less frequently than most, and that hasn’t been a problem in the past.

Lately though, the pressure’s been on. Andrew and Esther seem to be more exciting than just Andrew, and I agree! So my apologies for leaving the blog world in the dark since the big revelatory posting on November 22.

Leaving the DesertMuch has happened since then – it’s been quite a whirlwind. I moved out of the Southern California desert a week ago, leaving my job and many belongings behind (all those that couldn’t fit in my car!). After an all-nighter of packing and cleaning out my apartment, I crammed what I could into my Honda and finally began the drive home hours later than I had hoped. I quickly learned that the Friday before Christmas is not an ideal time to drive across half the state of California – a few other folks were doing the same – adding a few hours more to the already lengthy 7-hour drive.

After a stop for (a very late) lunch with a friend, I hurried back to the freeway and eventually made it to my parents’ home. But the wild events of the day were far from over, because you see, Esther was coming to visit! She had a late night flight arriving into San Francisco, another couple hours from my parents’ home.

With no time to spare, the Brumme pit crew flooded out to my car, unloading enough of my belongings to make room for the very important cargo soon to be loaded into the vehicle (ie my girl and her luggage). Within 10 minutes I was peeling out of the driveway, heading north to San Francisco under a moon-less night. I was exhausted, but more alive with excited anticipation than ever.

Esther and AndrewAfter leaving my job, packing up all my belongings, moving out of the desert, a sleepless night and 11 hours of driving, I made it to the San Francisco airport within minutes of Esther’s plane landing. She’d endured her own share of nonstop intensity, working against numerous end-of-the-year deadlines and countless other responsibilities all converging in the final hours before her trip to the U.S. began. After 22 hours, 3 flights and minimal sleep, Esther made it to San Francisco. As you might imagine, it was so good to be with one another!

Esther’s time in California with the Brumme clan went by quickly but was a delight on all fronts. She fit right in with the family, even whipping the Brumme boys into shape enough to pull a morning run. She was quickly immersed in the Brumme family Christmas traditions, stockings and all.

After a few days with her extended family in the east-coast, Esther’s now headed back home to France. And in just a few days, I’ll be following her across the Atlantic, beginning what I’m calling an “extended visit” in France.

Our time together with my family fueled our passion and excitement for this relationship as God continues to unfold the path before us. The 4 days in California was the longest sustained amount of time we’d ever been together, and in that one trip the total number of days we’d been together in person was doubled. It’s laughable and astounding.

We are continually laying the relationship before the Lord, seeking that “not our will but yours be done Lord.” And as we do so, He is giving us a freedom, peace and childish delight every step of the way.

He is also providing for us in amazing ways. At the time of my last post about our relationship, we had no idea about any of the practical details of this visit to France (job, income, housing etc.). And while there are still some questions, He has provided housing in a way that brought us again to our knees in praise.

Esther lives in a border town in France, just across the border from Geneva. Given the high cost of living in Geneva, many people work there but try to live in France where housing is (somewhat) more affordable. As a result, housing in Esther’s town is never available, and when it is, it’s snatched up instantly. Add into the mix Esther’s busy schedule and you have an unlikely scenario for finding housing anywhere nearby. But if I were to live an hour away from her, that would kind of defeat the purpose for me coming to France in the first place! So we prayed. And to our amazement, a few weeks ago, Esther’s landlady contacted her about an open apartment in her building. As if that wasn’t enough, the apartment is available the very same day I arrive in France. The faithfulness of the Father continues to amaze and humble us!

There’s still plenty of questions about this next season of my life in France with Esther, but God’s faithfulness in these past several months has left us without reason to be anxious. The freedom and joy we are walking in is like nothing I’ve ever experienced! So we’re going to keep walking. And in a matter of days, I’ll be blogging from the other side of the Atlantic! (And I’ll do my best to blog a bit more frequently – call it a New Year’s resolution!)
