Come to Our Church!
Church AdvertisingIt's official: some churches will literally do anything to get people through their doors on Sunday.

Now the ad at right isn't for real, but I've recently come across some church advertising that is totally legit...and it may shock you.

Check out this radio spot for St. Andrews Episcopal Church in Birmingham. YES this is the real deal. (Click to Listen) Thanks to Robbie Sagers for the tip off.

The ad reminds me of that powerful passage from one of the gospel accounts where Jesus is standing on a hill (shortly after the Sermon on the Mount I think?) calling out to those passing by:
I tell you the truth, he that joins us on Sunday will see me do some crazy miracles. Have you seen bread turned into rabbits? I can do that and more. And my disciples will be giving out buckets of water at no charge, so you won't have to make a trip to the well on Sunday. Why not join us? There will even be a grand finale with a breathtaking Pillar of Fire straight out of Exodus. Remember... come this Sunday Sunday SUNDAY!
I think that was from one of the lost gospels now that I think about it. In fact, it may not have appeared anywhere in Scripture.

Truth be told, Jesus just never tried to lure people into relationship with Himself. And he certainly never tried to lure people into a religious gathering.

MyLameSexLife.comAnother friend sent me this photo from somewhere near the town he is living in, advertising MyLameSexLife.com. This is a real billboard ad from Granger Community Church in Indiana. The website takes you to a list of upcoming sermons at the church relating to sex, and God's plan for sex. Thanks to Dave Raimer for the email tip off.

I actually think this billboard and website are a good use of advertising by a local church. And while the goal is still to draw people to hear a sermon, at least it doesn't promise that you'll "see sin crushed beneath monster loaves of bread".

But I wonder...if followers of Christ were living in real, healthy relationship with God and truly being the church, would we have any need for ad campaigns? Wouldn't our transformed lives be powerful enough PR to draw people from far and wide to the Father?
"Now many signs and wonders were regularly done among the people by the hands of the apostles. And they were all together in Solomon's Portico. None of the rest dared join them, but the people held them in high esteem. And more than ever believers were added to the Lord, multitudes of both men and women, so that they even carried out the sick into the streets and laid them on cots and mats, that as Peter came by at least his shadow might fall on some of them. The people also gathered from the towns around Jerusalem, bringing the sick and those afflicted with unclean spirits, and they were all healed." (Acts 5:12-16)
The church was held in high esteem and multitudes from all over the place were coming to the Lord. Perhaps we've substituted clever ad campaigns for the power of God. May we, the church, live truly astonishing lives that proclaim Christ to a watching world!
