Our Thoughts

A Whole New World
As we turn to the February 2008 page of our travel calendars, we realize just how charged January turned out to be. Highlights were Andrew’s birthday, my brother Stephen’s visit, many lovely evenings spent with dear friends, watching the Nutcracker in Zurich, colleagues skiing in the backyard of my parents home in the Alps and of course packing up for our adventure – the first stop of which brought us here to California.

To rehearse and rehash past events given the exciting new adventure we have embarked on would be a neck-nodding tragedy although a few of you had wanted to know what we did for Andrew’s birthday. So here goes. In his own words:

“The morning of January 12 arrived with all appropriate fanfare (read: food). Our local boulangerie contributed croissants, pliés au chocolat, croissants aux amandes, and even a little festive pastry with a gold printed joueux anniversaire chocolate on top. Add in my wife’s incredible mocca cappuccino and avocado/tomato scramble, and you’ve got a feast fit for a king (or at least, my birthday).

But the feast was just the beginning. After a few thoughtful cards and gifts from those willing to mail something across the globe, Esther handed me the surprise card. Flipping it over, I was told to prepare myself for “dinner with Willie”. My shocked and confused look begged for more information, and Esther explained we’d be boarding a flight to Belfast in a few short hours, and that indeed, that night we would be having dinner with my friend Willie in Belfast.

I first met Willie several years ago when 3 friends and I spent a week in Belfast studying homelessness. We had received a grant from our university for the trip. Willie works in the city center with all sorts of interesting characters, including the homeless. He was our primary contact during our visit to Belfast. Willie had a special impact on our lives during the trip, and I had visited him more recently with my brothers. I had hoped Esther could meet Willie someday, but with all the current change in our lives, just felt we didn’t have time.

After Esther explained it to me a few times, comprehension set in. Hours later, we were climbing into Willie’s car in Belfast. It was a great weekend full of truly “Belfast-esque” experiences, from the Ulster breakfast fry-up to the steady rain. The time with Willie was a highlight. As has always been the case, he poured out a constant stream of meaty theological tid-bits that demanded mental reflection and were full of practical implications. It was a real weekend with Willie!”

[Back to Esther] We could turn this into a really awkward detailed post about the best of January but we want you to keep watching this space as we attempt to update this a bit more frequently during our travels so you’ll have to ask us about the rest another time.

We arrived in San Francisco Thursday night after making the close connection in Heathrow due to terrible storms or some other excuse. Andrew’s brother Joey graciously picked us up in the family (of course Honda) Odyssey. Although we couldn’t see much at night, my first impressions were: the cleaned Brumme car & rims, big cars, palm trees!, remembering the smell of a skunk.

We made it to an inviting Brumme home for a special candle-lit welcome meal to the France Brumme team. We had a lot of fun and dropped dead to the world, collapsing on a plush bed bejeweled with welcome gifts and notes. I think we can get used to this treatment!

Although we’re sort of still in recovery mode from jetlag and packing frenzies, we already managed to make it to Target for a cultural (re)immersion and to Frye’s electronics and Apple Store to decide on a PC or MAC replacement for my dear Freddy the Fujitsu, who conveniently past away last week.

In fact, we even checked out a beach town church this morning just for “immersion level 2”. I had been warned I was overdressed in my casual skirt – such a different world.

It’s great to spend time with friends and family on this side of the planet. After our stay at the Brummes, its off south on Wednesday to Los Angeles to visit my old stomping ground and to visit many new dear friends.

Watch this space and hello & bye from the world of refill beverages (I have yet to find out why people buy large size refills), cheap petrol in comparison to our scandalous European prices and best of all, the world of cream soda!
