A Fishy Story Set Right
I’ve been dealing with a barrage of mail from supportive fans and brutal enemies – all stemming from a slanderous posting on a “friend’s” site (a site setup literally to ruin lives – checkout the domain name).

The most common response was similar to this note from friend Wendy:
“nice stunt with the monster carp. Hilarious”
I also received a few negative emails like the following from “Miguel”:
“I find myself questioning everything I have always thought was true. Thank God that I have Chris Van Veltzer to remind me how a Christian acts. I hope you 'little joke,' was worth it. I will probably never recover from this disappointment...you should be ashamed.”
Such dramatic letters demand that the truth come forward. And so, while RuiningYourLifeAndMine.net claims my harmless practical joke with an oversize fish was as vicious as forcing someone to “taste urine”, such slander cannot go unanswered.

The Truth
The truth? Chris and Jonathan spent the week fishing – all day and all night. It was obsessive, and even unhealthy. Rob and I sought to intervene as good friends…but to no avail. The addiction only increased. At one point while Rob was lovingly expressing his concern, Chris shouted a series of expletives and then swung his fishing pole towards Rob seeking to hook his flesh on the fish hook. I intervened just in time, but such out-of-control behavior took place often over those days. In a similar way, Jonathan was so obsessed that he had no time to clean or cook the fish he caught – choosing instead to smash the fish against a rock before biting into it – scales and all (similar to Gollum in Lord of the Rings). We were sickened and saddened. Had it really come to this?

Moroni on the LakeNear the end of our trip, the addicts were again gone fishing, leaving Rob and I to cook and clean the house. As I was scrubbing the dock with my own toothbrush, I saw some sort of being appear over the lake just a few yards from the dock. He said his name was Moroni and that he was the god of the lake. He explained how he had heard of our trials, and because of our good service, he had decided to offer one last chance for change to Jonathan and Chris.

He said that he would cause the largest fish in the lake to leap onto the dock, and then instructed me to put forth a story about Rob having caught the fish. The purpose was to incite jealousy in Chris and Jonathan, and teach them that success in fishing will come by being faithful servants, not by obsessing over fishing day and night. He also said to carry this story forth for about an hour, giving enough time for the addicts to change their ways. No sooner had Moroni disappeared than a massive carp launched itself out of the water and landed on the dock next to me, flopping around.

The Giant CarpI called to Rob and shared the experience with him. He of course agreed we must be obedient, and so we called to the obsessive fishermen as Moroni instructed. They returned, and upon seeing the fish and its size, it seemed true repentance might be at hand. Maybe, just maybe, they had realized the extent of their unhealthy addiction and were ready to turn from their evil ways back to the light!

It seemed to really be working. Jonathan had caught a large bass, but in light of “Rob’s” large catch...he saw it was nothing. He was clearly impacted, and even shed a few tears. We were so encouraged. This continued for nearly an hour. But, as Moroni instructed, it was time for us to share the purpose of the large carp and the fictional story from Moroni. And so we did.

Sadly, any steps towards repentance were immediately thrown out the window as rage ensued. Chris and Jonathan didn’t know how to respond. It was clear that they had already been making an idol of the massive fish, and that in fact it was only further fueling their obsession. It was clear that not a hint of change was present in their hearts. I know Moroni was grieved – but he had given them another chance and they simply made an idol out of it. They were truly beyond help.

Rob and I washed our hands of the situation at that point. Over the final days at the lake, it seemed Moroni still had one more way to cure Chris and Jonathan up his sleeve. From that point forward, they never caught another fish. Though they tried day and night until we left, they ultimately found themselves disillusioned. After Rob and I packed up the car to go home, we carried the two desperate addicts to the car as they wept uncontrollably, and drove away from the lake.

As we rounded the final turn around the lake heading home, I caught a view of Moroni hovering over the lake. He shouted to me so I could hear as we drove past,
You and Rob did well this week,
despite the failures of the other two.
Of their futures I will now speak
And the other addictions they will pursue.

They shall fall quickly like Bob Dole.
For their lives are as bread with yeast.
One to the white apple.
One to the female beast.
As we drove on, I wasn’t sure what Moroni’s riddle meant, but I knew it would only be a matter of time before I found out. Little did I know just how soon…
